Paul McCartney Concert Recording
Back in the summer of 1990, I had just graduated and moved back to Philly (yeah, I’m not sure why either). My friend Joe had a ticket to see Paul McCartney at the now defunct JFK Stadium in Philly. The chick he was going with had another ticket and I just didn’t have the cash to go. By the time I’d scraped up enough, she’d sold the ticket to someone else. I was so bummed. This was the moment I realized some concerts are once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Sure, he’d come around again but this tour featured one of the most amazing backing bands ever assembled for a show of this magnitude.
Paul McCartney – vocals, guitar, piano, bass
Linda McCartney – keyboards, background vocals
Robbie McIntosh – guitar, background vocals
Hamish Stuart – bass, guitar, background vocals
Chris Whitten – drums
Paul Wickens – keyboards
Say what you want about Linda. He loved her and that’s the only thing I care about in matters concerning his band.
So, it had always been one of life’s regrets not to have seen Paul on this tour. I can recall very vividly how Joe was trying to explain how amazing it was to me, his wild arm gestures and his voice going up when he was telling me about hearing this band play “Golden Slumbers” live.
And then this morning, I get my usual weekly email from Wolfgang’s Vault and there it was. Paul McCartney from that tour, July 4th from RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. If memory serves correctly, a week before the Philly show at JFK.
Gotta say I love this recording. If I could go back in time, I would have robbed a liquor store to get the cash to buy that ticket. This, however, is the next best thing.
