10 Songs About…
Dogs? Cars? Girls? Boys?…
I was having dinner with a very old friend of mine named Mike Lau who works at Warner/Chappell. Mike has been a music supervisor on films, tv shows (He got my music into the CBS Broadcast of the 1994 Winter Olympics) and now among the things he does is getting WC’s music into commercials and tv shows, etc… What’s known as “Sync Licenses” (short for “Synchronization” as in music to picture). At my previous gig, we did several sync licenses and let me tell you, the money for the artist and songwriter(s) is very, very good. For a national commercial, for a major brand, you’re talking about six figures… just so they can use your song. (Split between the artist and songwriter if they happen to be different people). Generally, that’s just for a “cycle”, meaning about 3 months, and if they renew for another cycle, they pay you again. I was involved in a deal where Chevy ended up using a song for a Trailblazer spot that ran for about a year. The money was pretty amazing.
And lest you think any different. The ONLY way musical artists make any real money these days is SYNC, MERCH and TOURING (and only if you’re a major headliner, opening bands lose tons of money to get exposure)
So as I was sitting with Mike, he told me that Music Supervisors (the people who are hired to find new, cool music for commercials, tv shows and movies) routinely search on MySpace.
MYSPACE?
Why not the PMN? Turns out he hadn’t even heard of the Podsafe Music Network.
Then I thought, what if someone created a music show, targeted mainly at music supervisors, where each episode featured 10 songs about a specific theme? 10 songs about girls? 10 songs about driving, heartbreak? etc… like a mix tape. And what if we make the PMN the kind of place where music supervisors also look for new music and new bands?
Maybe it would help more bands and labels to consider putting their stuff up there. Maybe it would help bands think about putting ALL their stuff up there.
More material. More music. See where I’m going with this?
So this morning I bought the domain name “10songsabout.com”.
Coming soon…
